Collagen is a substance the body produces which keeps the skin looking youthful. We don’t appreciate collagen until its production slows down with age and our skin begins to sag, show uneven tone and lose its youthful glow. Radiofrequency microneedling, or RF microneedling, is a facial treatment that combines two modalities to stimulate collagen production. The result is that aging skin looks more firm, plump, and fine lines even out. The overall contour is smoother and acne scars even out. Pores appear smaller, and the overall appearance is more youthful.
Radiofrequency microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy to the dermis, which is a layer of your skin just below the outer layer. The energy heats the dermis, causing it to respond to what it perceives as a microinjury, with a healing response of producing more collagen. The energy is delivered through a microneedle, whose tiny tip heats the dermis. The immediate effect is like that of a mild sunburn, and some dryness and peeling will occur, revealing new, smoother skin.
Prior to your treatment, a skin-numbing gel is applied and given time to work before the treatment is started. Treatment times may vary based on the area being treated but may be about 30 minutes to an hour, and discomfort is minimal. There is no “downtime,” and benefits are apparent within a few days. Depending on the condition of the skin, two to three treatments may be recommended at 1 month intervals, with touch-up treatments every few months to maintain the benefits of treatment.
